Sixth grade students at Read Mountain Middle School have partnered up with the international community at Hollins University to create a dynamic project. Through joint efforts of Holly Graham, Eric Woodard, and Angela Myers, sixth grade English teachers at RMMS, and Jeri L. Suarez, Associate Dean of Cultural & Community Engagement, students were given an opportunity to begin a pen pal relationship with a student who currently attends Hollins University as an international student.

RMMS students wrote letters about themselves and their culture to these students. They then each received a hand-written letter answering various questions along with describing key components of their culture from the international students.

On November 15th, 2013, they then had the opportunity to learn first-hand information about the cultures of Germany, Mexico, Japan, and Jamaica. These four students: Carmen Hermann of Germany, Priscila Montoya of Mexico, Shiori Makino of Japan, and Melissa Wilson of Jamaica shared fantastic presentations about important features of their cultures. This has been a very beneficial opportunity for RMMS students to learn about cultures around the world.
