The James River golf team captured the 2013 River Run Conference Tournament Championship Monday at Botetourt Golf and Swim Club. Under the new VHSL conference system, James River played in the River Run Conference 38 against Floyd, Giles, Glenvar, and Martinsville. The Knights performed well against the highly competitive field winning with a team score of 309. Floyd came in second with a team score of 316. Other team scores were Giles-322, Glenvar -338, and Martinsville-338.

Luke Arney lead the James River team and the entire field of 30 golfers winning medalist honors with an even par 71. Arney got off to a great start with an eagle on number one and continued to play the course in a very consistent and thoughtful manner. Arney’s 71 included a number of three putts, but he remained steady leading the number one group of golfers which included Austin Fox-Glenvar (76), Gunnar Fraizer-Giles (75), and Amanda Hollandsworth-Floyd(72). Second in the Knights lineup was Trevor Statome, who recorded his best eighteen hole score of the season at 76, a five over par. Statome also started off well and bested the other players in his group. Three scorer for the Knights was junior, Sean Kessler, who also played in a steady manner. Other James River golfers were Hunter Thompson-82, Aaron Atkins-83 and Noah Thompson-91. According to Coach Brenner, “We knew that Giles was going to be tough because we had played against them at last year’s state championships and we knew about Floyd from last year’s regions. I have been following these two teams throughout the season, and I knew we could beat them if we played up to our potential and avoided mistakes. The team played very seriously and with focus Monday. Golf is a very difficult and unforgiving game, so it takes maturity to play it successfully and our entire team did just that”. James River moves to the 2-A West Region Tournament this Thursday at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, VA.
