A CALL TO RECOGNIZE KINDNESS IN OUR COMMUNITY
ANNOUNCING THE 2ND ANNUAL
RICHARD HENGAR, Jr. Act of Kindness Community Award
The second annual Rachel’s Challenge Community event is scheduled for December 13, 2013, at James River High School. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Rachel Clubs from each Botetourt County secondary school. It will take place in conjunction with the boy’s basketball game between James River and Lord Botetourt. Last year, the first community event for Rachel’s Challenge took place prior to the annual meeting of these two teams. During halftime, Richard Henegar, Jr., a Lord Botetourt High School graduate, was named the original recipient of our community award. After hearing the story of a Radford University student who had been the victim of a hate crime, Richard took it upon himself to fix and remodel the young man’s vandalized car. This was Richard’s own personal act of kindness. Because of his desire to help individuals, Richard started a non-profit organization, Quality Cares, whose mission is to restore one vehicle per year for a person or organization in need. Quality Cares is currently restoring the Roanoke Rescue Mission van.
We are now seeking nominees for the Richard Henegar, Jr. Act of Kindness Community Award, named in honor of our first recipient. Nominees should be individuals who, through their actions, demonstrate kindness and compassion towards an individual, a group of individuals, or the community.
If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please write a short narrative that summarizes this person’s act of kindness and the impact it had on the individual(s) or community. In your submission, please include your name and telephone number, as well as the contact information for the person you are nominating.
